The Wellermen first captured global attention in 2021, when their viral sea shanty performances helped
spark the worldwide “Wellerman” phenomenon, generating billions of views and leading to appearances
at The BRIT Awards and on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. What began as a digital moment has
since evolved into a fully realized transatlantic live band with a devoted global fanbase. They mix the East
Coast folk sensibilities of basses Bobby Waters and Luke Taylor (Boston and Pennsylvania) with the
British musicianship of Jonny Stewart and Seb Payne, and the theatrical energy of Sam Pope, who
starred in the West End.
Blending American East Coast folk roots with British musicianship and theatrical performance energy, The
Wellermen have expanded beyond their shanty origins into a broader folk sound while maintaining the
powerful five-part harmonies that define them. Central to their identity is their rare dual-bass vocal
foundation, creating a depth and richness that sets them apart in modern folk.
With their EP 1778 and upcoming original material, The Wellermen are moving confidently into their next
chapter — honoring traditional roots music while building a contemporary folk sound centered on
harmony, story telling and connection.
